CHAPTER 15

INDIGO

Riley came hurrying back through the trees, still wearing practically nothing, his expanse of ginger chest hair completely open to the air. The freezing fucking air, because it was goddamn snowing. Giant fat flakes falling from the sky right onto his bare skin, and he didn’t even seem to notice, completely fixated on me.

Me? I was standing there on my front porch, axe in hand, staring at my arm. I hadn’t cleaned up the blood in back, because I hadn’t wanted to lose the proof that it existed.

That I’d been bitten.

Yesterday.

He hurried up the steps to me, his focus never wavering for a second. All on me, and it was . . . I shivered. It was intense. And part of me wanted to roll over and show him my belly, like we were dogs and he was the boss of me.

Not that I minded the image, but I wasn’t prone to giving in to that kind of impulse, so I took a deep breath and fought it down.

I didn’t intend to turn him down if he wanted me—really wanted me, and not just for a quick rub and tug in the kitchen—but I wasn’t going to hump his leg or something. I had at least a tiny measure of dignity left, even if it wasn’t much, after . . . well hell, I still wasn’t sure what had happened yesterday.

The same part of me that had wanted to roll over for Riley a moment earlier thought maybe we should go prowl the back porch, see if those wolves came back, and kick their asses.

Except I wasn’t completely out of my mind, and I couldn’t fight a fucking wolf. I couldn’t even fight one wolf, let alone a bunch of them.

Riley wrapped his enormous hands around my biceps, first looking into my eyes, and then inspecting the rest of me, like he needed to reassure himself I hadn’t died in the half hour or so he’d been gone. He barely spared the axe a passing glance, like it didn’t concern him at all that I had a weapon in my hands, much more interested in checking the rest of me over.

Carefully, I reached over and set the axe on the porch railing, so no one would get cut accidentally. Since he was so determined to ignore the thing. Sure enough, as soon as I’d finished, he stepped into my space and buried his face in my neck.

I was trapped somewhere between bewilderment and utter contentment, which was officially the weirdest combination of emotions ever.

“You feeling better?” he asked as he finally pulled away.

Instead of answering, I held up my arm. “Hallucinations?”

His smile was gentle rather than mocking as he shook his head. “No hallucinations. You’re not sick. You’re—” He paused and sighed, shaking his head. “This is too much for standing on the porch. Come back inside. I’ll make breakfast. You’re gonna be hungry soon.”

I already was hungry, in fact, but it was morning, so that wasn’t unusual. Still, I glanced at the road.
